The New Hay Meadow
The New Hay Meadow adjoins the small 'garden meadow' on the fringe of the White Garden. Our flower-rich grassland is a sanctuary for local wildflowers and associated creatures which typically belong in traditional hay-meadows. Sadly 98% of Britain's species-rich grassland has been destroyed in the last 50 years. We consider our project to be a vitally important conservation initiative - and with a stunningly beautiful result. Initially our rich loam was much too fertile for the wildflowers to be able to compete with the virulent grasses so, in 1997, we had to remove (and recycle) the topsoil to achieve this successful result.
Meadow restoration and creation is our special area of study. Our book is on sale and we run courses on 'Making Wildflower Meadows'.
